JOB DESCRIPTION: DIRECTOR OF MUSIC (PART TIME)
St. James, Dundas is seeking a talented and creative director of music who will lead, nurture, and grow music ministry at public worship services. The candidate will be a team player with strong interpersonal skills, working collaboratively with the Rector, and other church staff. A willingness to engage the local arts and music community to seek potential collaboration and partnerships is expected.
The candidate will be proficient in organ, piano performance, directing a volunteer choir and on occasion volunteer musicians, and will also accompany the choir and the congregation in various styles of music to engage a diverse multi-cultural community.
Key Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Rector.
• Sunday Services with short rehearsal beforehand
• Thursday evening choir rehearsals from September 1 until June 15.
• Music selection in consultation with the Rector.
• Music licence compliance and reporting
• Lead the coordination of, at minimum, two music concerts/recitals per year
• Develop and strengthen choir and music ministry
• Additional Services:
- Christmas Eve / Christmas Day services as determined by the rector
- During Lent and Holy Week: Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Vigil
- Other services as determined by annual plan
- Available for weddings and funerals
Qualifications
1. Proven skill as an organist and pianist
2. A diploma or degree in music from college, university or conservatory
3. Breadth of knowledge of traditional and contemporary Christian hymnody
4. Experience in choral conducting – ability to work with singers of all skill levels
5. Strong organizational and communication skills
6. Knowledge of Anglican liturgical tradition a strong asset
Employment Details
• Part-time position (14-15 hours per week): hours and remuneration to be determined.
• Location: 137 Melville St. Dundas, Ontario L9H 2A9
• Start date: August/September 2026.
• Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications following the RCCO scale.
