POSITION SUMMARY

St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Grimsby is seeking a Part-Time Church Musician to serve our parish community through music that supports and enriches the prayer and worship of the Roman Catholic Liturgy. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with the Pastor, parish staff, Choir Director, music ministers, and choir members.

This position requires demonstrated proficiency on keyboard/piano. The ability to play the organ and/or sing or lead hymns is considered a strong asset. The Church Musician is expected to be comfortable with a range of sacred music styles, from traditional to contemporary, and to foster a prayerful atmosphere that allows the congregation to participate fully in the liturgy.

POSITION DETAILS

·         Position: Church Musician: Piano/Keyboard – (optional Organ & Vocal Skills)

·         Status: Currently Vacant

·         Work Location: St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, 135 Livingston Avenue, Grimsby, ON

·         Time Commitment: Weekend Masses and seasonal liturgical celebrations, with additional opportunities for weddings and funerals (approximately 8-10+ hours per week)

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

·         Provide musical accompaniment for Sunday Liturgies, including:
o  
9:00 a.m. Mass with Choir Director and choir
o  
10:30 a.m. Mass with guitar minister and choir
o  
12:00 noon Mass (optional), with guitar ministers (no choir)

·         Collaborate with the Choir Director and other lead musicians in the selection and preparation of liturgical music

·         Participating in evening choir rehearsals as required

·         Provide music for major liturgical celebrations, including Christmas, Holy Week, Easter, and other special parish events throughout the year

·         Optional: Provide music for weddings and funerals (additional remuneration provided)

REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

·         Demonstrated proficiency in keyboard/piano performance

·         Ability to confidently accompany congregational singing

·         Openness to a variety of liturgical music styles, from traditional to contemporary

·         Strong interpersonal and communication skills

·         Willingness to collaborate respectfully with clergy, staff, choir members, and other musicians

·         Availability to work weekends, evenings, and major liturgical celebrations

ASSETS (NOT REQUIRED)

·         Experience playing the organ

·         Ability to sing, cantor, or lead hymns

·         Experience in choral direction or working with choirs

·         Familiarity with Roman Catholic liturgy, or a willingness to receive training in Catholic Church music

ADDITIONAL DUTIES (AS REQUIRED)

·         Assist the Choir Director in planning and implementing liturgical music for weekend and seasonal celebrations

·         Conduct or assist with choir rehearsals when needed

·         Support choir recruitment and maintain communication with choir members

·         Assist families with music selection for funerals and weddings, as assigned

·         May direct the choir in the absence of the Choir Director

·         Perform other related duties as assigned by the Pastor

ACCOUNTABILITY

This position reports directly to the Pastor of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

·         The first three months of employment are considered a probationary period

·         Continued employment is contingent upon satisfactory performance

·         The successful candidate must comply with the Safe Church Policy of the Diocese of St. Catharines

·         A police record check, deemed suitable by the Diocese of St. Catharines, will be required

·         Vacation time and statutory holidays are provided in accordance with Diocesan guidelines

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

This is a paid position, with compensation aligned with the guidelines of the Royal Canadian College of Organists (RCCO). Salary and hours are negotiable and dependent upon experience and skill level. Weddings and funerals are compensated separately.
