MUSIC DIRECTOR (Part-time)
St. Michael’s Anglican Church, Hamilton, Ontario
St. Michael’s, Hamilton, is seeking a talented and creative director of music to provide leadership in liturgical music that enriches worship and the spiritual life of the congregation, while connecting with and serving the wider community through music ministry.
Key Responsibilities, under the supervision of the Rector:
• Selecting service music and hymns that reflect the seasons of the liturgical year, while embracing the diversity of people and cultures within the parish and community, in consultation with the rector
• Strengthening and rehearsing the choir, while engaging professional and artistic development through learning new music and deepening musical interpretation
• Providing musical leadership through accompaniment, choir direction and support of the liturgical flow of worship services:
Sunday Services (10 am from September to June, 9 am in July and August), with a short rehearsal beforehand as needed
Additional Services:
Christmas Eve/Christmas Day services as scheduled by the rector
Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, All Souls Day
Other special services that may be planned throughout the year
Available for weddings and funerals where possible, for an extra fee
• Inviting and supervising guest musicians and/or soloists for special services eg. Remembrance Day, Easter
• Rehearsing the choir on an agreed day or evening (to be determined) from September to the end of June
• Organizing and presenting special music events in consultation with clergy, choir members and parishioners
• Supporting the parish’s missional and community outreach initiatives through music ministry
• Supervising the maintenance and care of the organ, piano and other musical equipment
• Music license compliance and reporting
Skills & Experience
• Proven skill and experience as an organist and pianist
• Strong organization and communication skills
• A diploma or degree in music from college, university or conservatory, or equivalent experience
• repertoire for recitals, anthems and solo accompaniment
• hymn playing to accompany and strengthen congregational singing
• improvisation, harmonization, some ability in composition
• transposition of a hymn to provide a comfortable key for congregational singing
• score reading of the four vocal parts in an anthem
• Experienced choral conductor with ability, enthusiasm and patience to work with all skill levels
• knowledge of Anglican liturgy and lectionary to enable a successful selection of suitable music for services is a strong asset
Employment Details
Part-time position (8 hours per week), with salary determined by the experience and qualifications of the candidate according to the current RCCO table.
Candidate agrees to work additional paid hours as we build a music-centered community, by developing programs that respond to the spiritual and cultural needs of the surrounding neighbourhood; engaging with the local music community to foster collaboration and partnerships that serve the wider community.
Contract could be re-negotiated in one year with more weekly hours if these programs develop.

The organ at St. Michael’s is a Rodgers Artist Series Model 579.
Our piano is an acoustic upright piano.
